Banditos and Banditas:

This Saturday August 14 I propose we run Niwot Ridge – something that has been missing from our runs this summer so far. Seems it will be a hot day on the plains (low 90’s) and probable thunderstorms later in the day – so probably better get an early start.

Niwot Ridge trail starts towards Long Lake from the Long Lake parking area at Brainard Lake rec area. It costs to get into the area ($9 last summer) unless you have one of several passes, so plan on dealing with that. The trail takes a southern turn at Long Lake and heads up the ridge – out of the timber and most of it above timberline. If you have not done this run before, it is a very rocky trail / road most of the way. You go past the CU research station on the side of the ridge. Coming down is equally challenging due to the large rocks, uneven terrain. A decent training for Imogene. Round trip around 10 miles I believe (but feels like a lot more).

If the weather looks threatening before we start, we can decide to park at the fee hut and run Waldrop trail through the trees, to the CMC cabin and then up to Long Lake and Isabelle Lake and get about 10 miles as well, with substantially less elevation gain than Niwot Ridge.

Let’s meet at Cindi and my house at 6:15 a.m. then head up Lefthand Canyon to Ward, then up to Brainard. Carpooling is a good idea as parking is quite limited.

Our house is at 182 Lefthand Canyon – turn west at the Greenbriar restaurant – we are the 4th house on the right – a small “Kangaroo Crossing” sign at the end of the driveway. Feel free to park in the driveway (there are a couple fo pull off areas) or on Lefthand.

Please RSVP so we know to wait for you.

Some Banditos are running from Eldora to Fraser (starting from Hessie as well).
Those folks may need help being shuttled to the trailhead (as can’t park their
cars at Hessie overnight). We’ll figure that out Saturday morning.

Plan for a 2-1/2 hour run. The King Lake trail from Hesse is 10.8 miles. Bring
plenty of water, food, layers, etc. Potato chips and pretzels are always a hit
to share afterwards.

See you then! HAH!

Saturday July 3rd falls on a holiday weekend with lots of adventures planned by bandits. Thus this 7/3 will be a “free” run weekend with no designated route leader.

Suggestions:
1. Local: Mesa Trail at dawn. Watch the sunrise and finish as most hikers are starting. Make sure you don’t shower for a few days prior so you pass hikers with glam! Be cautious at the Bear Canyon pool just beyond Mesa as mountain lions have wild drinking parties there until the early hours.

2. Semi-Local: Back to Golden Gate State Park. Try the Rifleman Campground trailhead and head out to Windy Peak. Lots of gnarly uphills for cursing practice. If you have time, get your bandit self through a loop that includes Frazer meadow – peaceful self practice.

3. Head west: 4th of July and Hessie are always good bets or up Arapahoe pass is always a treat. Go early; avoid being on top beyond Noon. Lightning + Bandits = Bad, (but not the good kind of bad-ass “bad”)

4. Epic: Drive or ride (yes your bike) up (super early or camp?) to Rocky Mountain National Park to Bear Lake trailhead. Run up to Flattop mountain then across the Divide’s National Scenic trail to the Green Mountain trailhead enjoying Granite Falls along the way. Feeling good? – side trip to Haynach Lake or skip dinner in Grand and run back to Bear. Sounds good to me…

Whatever you do, have fun and be safe!
Bandita Drake
